Levels of support

Tier 1 Supports

Tier 2 Supports

Tier 1 supports are a combination of systems, data, and practices that are implemented schoolwide. They are the foundation for regular, proactive support to help students exhibit their best behavior and follow expectations.
  • Effectively teach appropriate behavior to all students
  • Intervene before unwanted behavior escalates
  • Foundation for all other support systems on campus
  • Monitors student progress
  • Uses data to make decisions
Key Practices
  • School-wide expectations and behaviors are defined and taught
  • Classroom routines and procedures are consistent with school-wide expectations
  • Appropriate behaviors are recognized and rewarded
  • Clear system for discipline
When the core PBIS features are in place with high levels of fidelity, the majority of students will respond positively to those systems and practices.  However, a smaller group of students will require some additional interventions and supports to address either externalizing or internalizing behaviors.
Tier 2 interventions are an opportunity to provide additional structure, learn and practice skills, and receive more frequent feedback to specific social-emotional-behavioral areas if needed. Current Northwood Tier 2 supports:
  • Check In/Check Out
  • Strong Start and Strong Kids
  • Attendance Monitoring
  • Lunch Bunch Groups
  • Worry Warrior Group
  • Other SEL groups as needed
Check In/Check Out is a program that provides frequent feedback, connects to school wide expectations, increases positive adult contact, embeds social skills training, positively reinforces meeting goals, targets specific behaviors, and provides data for decision making.
Strong Start and Strong Kids is a curriculum that consists of 10-12 small group lessons that promote social and emotional skills in students.
Attendance Monitoring is conducted to help encourage regular school attendance in students who have missed 10% or more of the school year.
Lunch Bunch, Worry Warriors, and other groups are conducted by Ms. Paule during the school day to help students build and develop needed skills..
