Northwood is part of a grant from the State of California to help imrpove literacy for early elementary students. It helps us provide professional development and instruction materials for stronger reading instruction.

  • Create a reading space at home!
    • Make it cozy with pillows, blankets, special stuffed animals to read to, bean bag chairs, etc.
    • Make an at home library that supports their reading skills and includes their interests
  • Encourage reading at night before bed. It's a great way to relax and have some screen free time before bed.
  • Read every day. Twenty minutes makes a difference.
  • Talk about books. Ask questions.Talk about topics and interests that come up when reading. Encourage curiousity and learning!
  • Visit the library or local book store.
  • Make it fun! Reading is a necessary skill for life, and can be a lifelong learning opportunity.
